Authorities in Waukesha County have launched an investigation following the death of a patient over the weekend at the Regional Crisis Stabilization Facility. According to a news release issued Sunday night, initial reports suggest the incident occurred at the facility located on Airport Road and appears to have been a suicide. While those early findings point toward self-harm, officials say the Waukesha County Medical Examiner’s Office will be responsible for determining the final official cause and manner of death.

In addition to the criminal investigation being handled by the sheriff’s department, Waukesha County announced that it will carry out its own internal review of the event. To maintain the privacy of the deceased and their grieving family members, county representatives stated they will not be releasing further specific details regarding the identity of the individual or the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.

The regional center is part of a broader state initiative aimed at expanding mental health access throughout Wisconsin. Opened in 2024 with federal funding managed by the Department of Health Services, it is one of five such facilities designed to serve as a middle ground for individuals facing psychiatric or substance use emergencies. These centers provide a safe environment for people who cannot remain securely in their communities but do not require full hospitalization.

This incident comes amid ongoing efforts to bolster behavioral health responses in Southeast Wisconsin.
